May 31, 2015 SDR (Software Defined Radio) has become ever easier thank to the many tuners that have come on the market. A software defined radio USB dongle stick that can pick up a range of frequencies combined with the right software can display a multitude of wireless transmissions. RTL-SDR is a very cheap $25 USB dongle that can be used as a computer based radio scanner for receiving live radio signals in your area (no internet required). Depending on the particular model it could receive frequencies from 500 kHz up to 1.75 GHz. Most software for the RTL-SDR is also community developed, and provided free of charge.

Minimal specs for a small PC laptop for SDR use.
Looking to ditch the Windows install on my MacBook Pro and get a dedicated PC Laptop for all my radio needs including SDR and digital signal decoding (SDR#, DSD+, HD780, etc). What are the minimum specs needed to get the job done well? I did have a bad experience with a 2008 HP laptop a few years ago. I could not use SDR# or HDSDR without crashing. Would like to spend as little money as possible. Also looking at tablets that can run Win 7/8.
